Open Garden Hours every Saturday morning and Wednesday evening

East Hollywood Community Garden, opened in July 2019 is a place where community members grow healthy food and meet people of diverse cultures to share gardening practices. As stewards of Tongva land, we are an organic garden and use Indigenous techniques such as no till-gardening and crop rotation. We are part of a network of gardens with the Los Angeles Community Garden Council (LACGC).

Our half-acre garden consists of 31 plots for lease by household; a communal vegetable plot; fruit vines, bushes, and trees; native plants; a building that serves as LACGC’s headquarters; a shed; an ADA-accessible parking space; electric vehicle charger; and bicycle racks. The garden is adjacent to the Madison Avenue Public Park which is managed by the City of Los Angeles’ Department of Recreation and Parks.

All are welcome at our community garden at 1177 N Madison Avenue. Open to the public on Saturday morning and Wednesday evenings. Visitors can harvest herbs, vegetables, berries, and fruit from our communal areas.

Open Garden Hours
Saturdays 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Wednesday 5 to 7 p.m. (During standard time: Wednesdays 4 - 5:30 p.m. November to March)

Volunteer with Us

No prior sign-up or garden experience needed. Just show up during open garden hours as the garden host can show you a variety of tasks that need to be done, such as compost sifting, weeding, watering, and plant maintenance. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes that can get dirty. Bring a hat, sunblock, water bottle, and garden gloves. You can also borrow used garden gloves.

Food Scrap Donations & LA Compost Co-Op Site

During open garden hours, bring kitchen scraps to add to our compost bin, such as fruit (remove stickers) and veggie scraps, coffee grinds, and egg shells. We do not take foods cooked in oil, dairy, or meat. We ask each person to cover their scraps with provided “browns” to keep flies away. You can also bring and tear up your own non-bleached, paper products to cover your kitchen scraps. Register at LA Compost.

Join the Plot Waitlist and Become a Garden Member

Our 31 plots are 4 x 12 feet and rented each month. In addition to paying dues, each garden member is required to contribute 2 hours per month to the communal areas by hosting open garden hours or other tasks. Garden members share tools and supplies, can access the garden to tend their plot and donate kitchen scraps from dawn to dusk everyday. All plots are currently leased.

After reading our garden agreements, apply to be on the waitlist by volunteering for at least 1 hour. Learn about the garden, how to spend required communal hours, and submit a plot application. You are officially added to the waitlist when you have both volunteered one hour and submitted an application. Each quarter, you may move up the waitlist by volunteering at least one-hour a month during open garden hours compared to community members on the waitlist that did not record at least three volunteer hours in the previous three months. Read our garden agreements and submit a plot application.
